China produces over 60% of the world’s injection molds. But choosing the right supplier can make or break your project. After 27 years in the industry, here is what I tell every buyer.
## 1. Look Beyond the Price Tag
The cheapest quote often costs the most. A mold that fails after 50,000 shots costs far more than one that runs 500,000+ cycles. Calculate Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), not just the upfront price.
## 2. Check Their Technical Capability
Ask these questions before you commit:
– What CAD/CAM software do they use?
– Do they offer DFM (Design for Manufacturability) analysis?
– What is their tolerance capability? (We hold ±0.01mm on critical features)
– Do they have in-house CNC, EDM, and CMM?
## 3. Verify Quality Systems
A supplier without ISO 9001 is a red flag. Look for:
– Documented QC processes
– Material certification (steel grade, hardness)
– Dimensional inspection reports
– Mold trial reports with sample parts
## 4. Communication Matters
The best technical team is useless if they cannot communicate. Make sure your supplier:
– Responds within 24 hours
– Provides weekly progress updates
– Has English-speaking project managers
– Shares photos and videos during production
## 5. Visit If You Can
Nothing replaces a factory visit. You will see:
– Real equipment condition (not brochure photos)
– Shop floor organization and cleanliness
– How workers handle tools and materials
– Whether they are genuinely busy or just saying so
